| Course Requirements | ||
| Introduction: | This
course is
comprised of three training modules. Each module is composed of several
sections (classes). Students who complete this course will earn 15
hours of in-service training credit. |
|
| Requirements: | Students
must read the
material contained in each of the three training modules. After the
student has read the material in a given module, he must take the
module quiz. In order to successfully complete a module quiz, the
student must score 70%. The student will be given two opportunities to
successfully complete the quiz. At the director's discretion, a third
opportunity may be granted upon the request of the student's chief,
sheriff or agency administrator. |

| Lesson: | Legal Issues | |
| Objectives or Goals: | The
first objective of this training module is to provide
the
student with a review of the definitions of common terms and phrases
that are used in animal control related laws. The second objective is to review significant statutes that an animal control officer may use frequently in the course of his duties. The third objective of this training module is to provide the student with a review of the legislative changes that passed during the previous two year period by Virginia General Assembly. |

| Lesson: | Animal Care | |
| Objectives or Goals: | The
first
objective of
this module is to provide an overview of the regulations pertaining to
the administration of a pound or shelter. The second objective is to provide instruction in the proper method of cleaning and sanitizing dog and cat kennels and an animal control vehicle. The third objective of this training module is to provide the student with an overview of issues related to caring for a dog and to identify various common diseases that a dog may contract. The fourth objective of this training module is to provide the student with an overview of issues related to caring for a cat and to identify various common diseases that a cat may contract. The fifth objective of this training module is to demonstrate the challenges of using a catchpole. |

| Lesson: | Enforcement | |
| Objectives or Goals: | The
first
objective of
this module is to identify the causes of stress in the workplace. The second objective of this module is to identify the methods of managing work stress The third objective of this module is to provide information that will help the student recognize when a child's injury or illness is caused by abuse. The fourth objective of this module is to explain the results of research that indicates that there is a strong link between animal abuse and youth violence. The fifth objective of this training module is to provide the student with a thorough knowledge of rabies. |
