All students are
required to complete an
on-line Instructor Fundamentals course that includes a PowerPoint
tutorial, an overview of academy policies and other instructional
related topics.

| Course Requirements |
| Introduction:
|
This
is the entry level instructor
course required for the Department of Criminal Justice Services to
qualify for certification as a general instructor. This is a
very
academically demanding course and students will be required to develop
two classroom presentations that include lesson plans and audio visual
aids and successfully complete a final written examination.
This
course is a prerequisite for all specialty instructor courses including
firearms, defensive tactics, speed measurement and driver training
instructor. All students must have a minimum of two
years
of experience with a criminal justice agency.
Students that
successfully complete this course will receive 40 hours of in-service
credit (36 hours career development/4 hours legal).
Students
will be certified as a General Instructor after successfully completing
an apprenticeship under the supervision of a certified instructor in
accordance with Department of Criminal Justice Services regulations.

Students must
prepare a final 20 minute presentation on which they will be evaluated
on a pass/fail basis. Students may be required
successfully complete a
written examination with a minimum score specified by the academy.

- Identify the goals of the academy staff.
- Identify the duties of the academy staff.
- Identify the duties of an instructor.
- Identify the characteristics of a good instructor.
- List the characteristics of an adult learner.
- Define a training need.
- Identify the five phases of the ADDIE instructional
design model.
- Identify the need for research and development of
training materials.
- List sources of information for the development of a
training program.
- Identify the advantages of the various methods of
instruction.
- Identify the factors that will determine the most
effective method of instruction for a training course.
- Identify the components of communication.
- Identify the three personal communication tools of
the instructor.
- List the basic methods of public speaking.
- Given an assigned topic, the student will present a
block of instruction to the class that meets the requirements
established in the Instructor Presentation Guidelines.
- Identify the components of an instructional objective.
- Identify the process for building a training solution.
- Identify the purposes for developing training
objectives.
- Given an assigned topic, the student will write at
least two performance objectives for use in conjunction with the
development of a lesson plan and oral presentation.
- Identify the components of a lesson plan cover sheet
as specified by academy policy.
- List the purposes of a lesson plan.
Identify the components of a lesson plan format as specified by academy
policy.
- List the steps involved in the preparation of a
lesson plan.
- Given an assigned topic, research the topic and
prepare a lesson plan using an approved academy cover sheet and lesson
plan format.
- Identify how audio-visual aid can be used to enhance
an instructional presentation.
- Define vicarious liability.
- Define a tort.
- Identify the degree of proof required for a favorable
finding in a civil proceeding
- Identify the rules that govern the certification and
re-certification of instructors.
- Identify the characteristics of a valid test.
- Identify the common types of criteria tests.
- Identify principles of a properly constructed written
test question.
- Identify the purpose of administering a testing
instrument.
- Given an assigned topic, the student will write one multiple choice and
one true/false format.
- Identify the primary purpose for managing the classroom environment.
