Prerequisite(s): All students are required to complete an on-line Instructor Fundamentals course that includes a PowerPoint tutorial, an overview of academy policies and other instructional related topics.

Course Requirements
Introduction: This is the entry level instructor course required for the Department of Criminal Justice Services to qualify for certification as a general instructor.  This is a very academically demanding course and students will be required to develop two classroom presentations that include lesson plans and audio visual aids and successfully complete a final written examination.

This course is a prerequisite for all specialty instructor courses including firearms, defensive tactics, speed measurement and driver training instructor.  All students  must have a minimum of two years of experience with a criminal justice agency.

Students that successfully complete this course will receive 40 hours of in-service credit (36 hours career development/4 hours legal).

Students will be certified as a General Instructor after successfully completing an apprenticeship under the supervision of a certified instructor in accordance with Department of Criminal Justice Services regulations.

Requirements: Students must prepare a final 20 minute presentation on which they will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis.  Students may be required successfully complete a written examination with a minimum score specified by the academy.

  2. Identify the duties of the academy staff.
  3. Identify the duties of an instructor.
  4. Identify the characteristics of a good instructor.
  5. List the characteristics of an adult learner.
  6. Define a training need.
  7. Identify the five phases of the ADDIE instructional design model.
  8. Identify the need for research and development of training materials.
  9. List sources of information for the development of a training program.
  10. Identify the advantages of the various methods of instruction.
  11. Identify the factors that will determine the most effective method of instruction for a training course.
  12. Identify the components of communication.
  13. Identify the three personal communication tools of the instructor.
  14. List the basic methods of public speaking.
  15. Given an assigned topic, the student will present a block of instruction to the class that meets the requirements established in the Instructor Presentation Guidelines.
  16. Identify the components of an instructional objective.
  17. Identify the process for building a training solution.
  18. Identify the purposes for developing training objectives.
  19. Given an assigned topic, the student will write at least two performance objectives for use in conjunction with the development of a lesson plan and oral presentation.
  20. Identify the components of a lesson plan cover sheet as specified by academy policy.
  21. List the purposes of a lesson plan.
  22. Identify the components of a lesson plan format as specified by academy policy.
  23. List the steps involved in the preparation of a lesson plan.
  24. Given an assigned topic, research the topic and prepare a lesson plan using an approved academy cover sheet and lesson plan format.
  25. Identify how audio-visual aid can be used to enhance an instructional presentation.
  26. Define vicarious liability.
  27. Define a tort.
  28. Identify the degree of proof required for a favorable finding in a civil proceeding
  29. Identify the rules that govern the certification and re-certification of instructors.
  30. Identify the characteristics of a valid test.
  31. Identify the common types of criteria tests.
  32. Identify principles of a properly constructed written test question.
  33. Identify the purpose of administering a testing instrument.
  34. Given an assigned topic, the student will write one multiple choice and one true/false format.
