Parking Lot or Auto Dealership?

July 9, 2010 – 5:44 am

Parking Lot?Sean Phillips opened the Sell It lot on U.S. 11 in Radford to give people a high visible lot to display their vehicles for sale. However, a DMV spokesperson says Virginia law makes it illegal for “anyone except a licensed dealer to do anything for profit that involves any aspect of displaying, offering or attempting to sell motor vehicles for themselves or for others.”

If you want to sell your own car in Virginia, it must be displayed on the owner’s private land or the landowner must be a licensed dealer.

I am sure that the DMV spokesperson is technically correct but, in practice, this law is virtually unenforceable. Just take a second to think this one through. How many vehicle have you seen parked on the street downtown with a “For Sale” sign in the window. Have you driven by a Walmart parking lot lately? It isn’t uncommon to see 10 or15 cars parked near the street and marked for sale.

Mr. Phillips could argue that he is merely renting a parking space that happens to be in a high visibility area. At worst, by its very nature, this law is resulting in selective enforcement at its worst.

If It Ain’t Broke, Fwix It Anyway

April 22, 2010 – 7:11 am

FwixThe internet is a great news resource but the volume of information can be overwhelming. I don’t mind hearing about national and world news but I prefer to read about my local news.

I finally found a way to distill out the news that is important to me – I Fwix it. Fwix is an aggregation site that searches my local media news sources including television and newspapers then gathers it together on a single page. The page is broken up into sections, like business, crime or sports with a headline and short synopsis of each story.

Just create your account, put in your zip code and select your topics of interest. There are also Fwix-powered apps available for mobile phones. It is a great way to monitor stories about a given event (you know – like Quadfest). It is my new favorite daily read. Check it out.

MacFuse Issue With Parallels Desktop

April 14, 2010 – 9:16 am

Parallels Desktop and MacFuseI upgraded Mac OSX Tiger to Snow Leopard and all went well. However, I have Parallels Desktop Version 5 installed on my MacBook and I am running Windows XP. When I started Win XP using Parallels, it started OK but I got the following warning message:

Operating System too old
The installed macFUSE version is too new for the operating system.
Please downgrade your macFUSE installation to one that is compatible with current running operating system.

I did not find a solution on the Parallels website but a quick Google search revealed an article at http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=19247.

I downloaded and installed MacFuse Version 2.0.3.2 from http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/. Everything worked fine afterward. I hope this article helps someone else.

Watch Classic Cartoons Anytime

March 28, 2010 – 20:00 pm

ToonJetI grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. Back then television was limited to three network channels.

I remember laying on the floor in front of our black and white television watching cartoons with my sister and four brothers. We enjoyed the classic cartoons like Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Popeye.

The television stations today don’t carry these good old fashion cartoons but now you can find them on the internet on ToonJet. They show my old favorites all day every day. Check them out.
