Assigning a Drive Letter To a USB Drive
March 24, 2005 – 19:49 pmHere is a convenient tip for those of you who are using a flash memory usb drive (jump, thumb etc.). When you install the drive (plug it in) Windows XP assigns it a drives letter. Here’s how to reassign drive letters:
1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Choose Manage.
3. Click Disk Management.
4. Right-click the drive you want to rename.
5. Select Change Drive Letter or Path.
6. Select your new drive letter.
You cannot change a drive letter to a drive letter that already exists, and you cannot change your boot drive (C). I assign my usb drive the letter “B”. In the olden days, the “B” drive was usually a 5.25 inch floppy. Since we quit using the 5.25 drive, the drive letter tends to go unassigned. Once you set it to “B”, everytime you plug it in, it will show up as the “B” drive.
