And On the Eighth Day . . . Google Maps Was Created

January 26, 2007 – 12:41 pm

BibleMapsWhen Google Maps first came out, there was a lot of chatter about it on the internet. Bloggers and podcasters went on and on about how cool it was but for me, it was a real yawner. It was sort of neat to zoom in and see the Colosseum or to see what my neighborhood looked like from space but, after the spending an hour or two playing around with it, I lost interest.

Since then, I have run across some innovative uses for the program, but very few of them have really impressed me – until now. I enjoy reading about historic figures and events but I have to admit my geography skills are lacking. I find it difficult to keep up with which county is located where since, in certain parts of the world, you need a score card to keep up with the ever changing names of the countries.

Of course this name game is not new. If fact it has been going on since Biblical times so good luck trying to picture a place mentioned in the Bible. This is where the innovative use of Google Maps can really come in handy by helping you find Biblical locations on today’s maps using BibleMap.

BibleMap is really simple to use. First you select either the English Standard or King James versions of the Bible. Next, you select a book containing a geographical landmark or region you want to locate, click on the hyperlink location and you are virtually transported to the location (well not really – you just see it on a Google Map). The hyperlinks include cities, regions, geographic features and more. Once your location is marked, it works just like any other Google Map. You can see satellite views or zoom in and out on the location. Check it out!

Voice Mail Etiquette

January 16, 2007 – 21:48 pm

voice mailHave you ever received one of those voice mail messages where you just wanted to scream, “Does this train have a caboose?” You know the type of message that I am talking about. It meanders around like a West Virginia mountain road until the very end and then the caller rattles off a call back number so quickly that a court stenographer wouldn’t be able to catch it, forcing you to listen to the whole message a second time.

I have come to the conclusion that many people have never learned the etiquette of leaving a proper voice mail message. It is actually a very simple process if you follow these guidelines. Let’s pretend that you are leaving me a voice mail. First, tell me who you are by stating your name and your company or organization. Don’t assume that I will recognize your voice.

Next, clearly and slowly provide your telephone number, starting with the area code. You may even want to repeat the number a second time.

Next, tell me whether I need to return your call and then tell me why you called – remember short and succinct are two adjectives that should apply here. Finally, repeat your telephone number one more time in case I didn’t have a pencil and paper handy at the start of your message.

Try to remember that my voice mail system in not a Nextel communications device. If you want to tell me your life’s story, just ask me to call you back, don’t leave it on my voice mail system. Somehow I don’t think I am the only one who would prefer that you following these simple rules of voice mail etiquette so think about them the next time you hear the beep.

Website: Take a Vista Test Drive

January 13, 2007 – 9:35 am

VistaWindows Vista will finally be available for consumers to purchase in a couple of weeks. Of course Microsoft will do its best to convince everyone that they absolutely “have” to have the the new operating system.

Vista does have some new features that you may like find to be an improvement over XP. There is a lot of “eye candy” and it is more “Mac-like” but there is going to be a learning curve for new users so don’t install it if you are in the middle of a busy time at work or in your life.

If you would like to get a feel for Vista before you make your upgrade decision, check out the Microsoft test drive site. The site will show you the new features and let you kick the tires on Vista. You will have to park Firefox if you are going to take this test drive since it will only run if you are using Internet Explorer. You also have to download and install an ActiveX control.

You may also want to review my previous article on the many Vista options from which you have choose. Just visit To Vista or Not To Vista – That Is The Question!

Holiday Policing – It Sucks!

January 7, 2007 – 13:03 pm

SantaRecently, I received some comments suggesting that I include more training videos, along with some commentary, in the blog. When Mack Pettigrew, my co-host on CopCAST, sent me this video, I knew this was one that had to go on the blog. This is not the type of video that I like to show but it is part of the job and, as most of you know, sometimes the holidays bring out the worst in people.

YouTube and Police Videos . . .Uhmm!

January 6, 2007 – 10:07 am

YouTubeIf you have ever visited YouTube.com and waded through the thousands of homemade videos that would have been better left on the cutting room floor, you may be asking why Google spent over a billion dollars to buy it. If you are anticipating an answer to this question, you are probably reading the wrong blog. Although I believe the overwhelming majority of the videos on YouTube could be deleted without having any impact on the human condition, I also find myself pondering about how to use all that free bandwidth for a beneficial purpose. For example, one police agency posted a security video in hope of receiving tips on the identity of the perps . . . and it worked!

So why not use some of those YouTube videos of police situations like pursuits and shoot outs as training tools? Some of the police related videos are actually professionally produced news footage while others come from in-car cameras. They make great fodder for discussion about pursuit and tactical response techniques and they don’t cost a dime! Here are a couple of examples to consider.

Achieving Your Personal Goals – Part IV

January 3, 2007 – 10:32 am

ProductivityIn Achieving Your Personal Goals – Part III, I discussed the importance of affording the same degree of attention to your personal obligations as you afford to your professional obligations. I also discussed the importance of effectively managing the obligations on both sides of your life. Your homework assignment was to identify all of your to-do tasks and place them in one location – an “in-box of some sort depending on the Personal Information Management (PIM) system that have chosen to use.

Now that you have collected all of your life tasks into one central clearing point, the really hard work is about to begin. I imagine that you are looking a pretty significant stack of to-do items. You have probably come to the conclusion that there are not enough hours in a day for you to accomplish all the tasks in your in-box. It is obvious that some tasks are going to have to be deferred for a while so your next assignment is to prioritize you to-do tasks.

We are going to use a hierarchal approach to prioritizing your tasks. Picture an outline format like your English teacher encouraged you to use when you were developing a composition. In a standard outline format, the broadest categories of topics were designated using a Roman numeral (i.e. I., II., III) but it really doesn’t matter how you label your top level categories as long as you understand your system.

For the first step in our prioritization process, we are going to focus on separating our to-do tasks into three broad categories for the time being. Read each of your tasks and categorize them based on their degree of importance to your success. For instance, if a task is critical to your success, label it with an “A” and place it in a separate stack. Next, you may have a task that is important but not critical so label it with a “B” and place it in a second stack. Finally, you will have certain tasks that would be nice to do if you had some spare time but they will make a minimal contribution to your success so label these tasks with a “C” and place them in a third stack.

After you have completed this broad categorization of your tasks, you should have a much better handle on your situation. In the next article, we will talk about setting up a simple system to organize your tasks even further and so you can begin the process of achieving your personal goals.

Website: Need Tech Help – Get a Human

December 26, 2006 – 8:03 am

Customer ServiceI hope Santa brought you exactly what you wanted for Christmas. However, even if you received what you wanted, sometimes you need a little help putting it together or getting it up and running. Most products list a customer (no) service number on the box or in the instruction manual. Unfortunately, many times this number is nothing more than a voice system maze. If you need to talk to a “live” customer service person you may want to visit GetHuman.com. They maintain a database of “secret” company telephone numbers for getting a live human on the line.

Website: Philips’ Perfect Gift – Perfect For Procrastinators

December 19, 2006 – 15:49 pm

Philips Perfect GiftI was talking to a buddy of mine today and I asked him if he had finished all of his Christmas shopping. He just laughed and said, “Christmas shopping? Hell, I don’t even start until Christmas Eve!” Fortunately most of us are not quite that bad but if you find yourself in a quandary about a last minute gift, you might want to stop by the Philips Perfect Gift web site.

This sexy Flash-style website gives you several gift ideas based on the information that you input about the person for whom you are buying the gift. If you see something you like, you can click on the picture and add it to your gift list. Once you finish picking out your gifts, you can e-mail your list to yourself. Of course, I thought about picking out a bunch of stuff for myself and then e-mailing it to my wife – just to make her Christmas shopping a little easier.

As a little side feature, the site also has a holiday wish page where users can light virtual candles for their loved ones. Just click on the “Make a Wish” button and light a virtual candle by sending a wish to someone via e-mail. Once the candle is lit, it is added (in real time) to the other candles from the 21 participating countries, making for a unique and truly international forum to celebrate the holidays.
