Time To Learn To Type

September 29, 2006 – 8:39 am

If you haven’t figured it out yet, you are eventually going to have to learn to type your reports on a computer, if you aren’t already required to do it. Fortunately there a free add-in for Firefox that will help get past the hunt and peck. The add-in is called Addictive Typing Lessons. Of course you will need to install the Firefox browser first but you should be using it instead of Internet Explorer anyway (for security reasons and features).

Addictive Typing Lessons isn’t fancy but it is free and it will help you build your typing skills. It offers a variety of different lessons and it times you. It even keeps track of your best score along with your most recent scores.

Of course the beauty of the internet is that, if you need it, someone has already put it on the net. As an alternative, try the websites below that teach you to type for free!

Finally, A Useful Internet Video

September 29, 2006 – 7:52 am

If you are taking the time to read this blog, you have probably also checked out an internet video or two on youtube.com or yahoo video.  Most of these homemade videos aren’t worth the electrons it took to make them, although a few are really funny.  However, very few have any socially redeeming value but I finally found one.  If you think you already know how to fold a shirt, you are probaby an amateur compared to this Asian lady.  This almost makes folding laundry fun.  Hey, I said it “almost” made it fun.  Take a look and learn something useful for a change.  The audio is not in English but it really doesn’t matter.

Of course, you only do it to improve you skills with a computer mouse or increase your finger dexterity so you will be able to type reports faster . . . . right?? With these lofty goals in mind, check out this great flash game website. You will find all the flash games that have been featured on the front page of digg.com. I am sure you will find a game or two that will help you waste away a few hours.

Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger!

September 21, 2006 – 6:41 am

Most cops probably had that range master who constantly remindied you to keep your finger off the trigger unless you were going to fire your weapon. It has probably been a while since you attended entry level training but the message is still just as important. Check out this video of an officer who forgot this rule during the heat of the moment. Fortunately, no one was hurt but a bathroom break is probably in order.

Attitude

September 19, 2006 – 21:15 pm

For several years, I have kept this short essay by Charles Swindoll on “attitude” posted on my refigerator so I see it every morning. When things get tough, it has a way of bringing everything back into perspective. I hope it will have the same effect on you.

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company … a church … a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable.

The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude … I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you … we are in charge of our Attitudes.

Teacher Applicant Response

September 13, 2006 – 21:18 pm

My son is doing his student teaching assignment at Louisa County High School. He sent me this and I though it was cute so I wanted to pass it along. The author is unknown.

After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said:

“Let me see if I’ve got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning, and I’m supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits.

You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem. You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job.

I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of anti-social behavior, make sure all students pass the state exams, even those who don’t come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments.

Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card.

All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps! You want me to do all of this and then you tell me…

I CAN’T PRAY?”

September 5, 2006 – 5:53 am

If you or your kids are attending college, you may want to check out the web’s source for free educational materials. This site is a student-run, volunteer-operated website started in response to the textbook industry’s constant drive to maximize profits instead of educational value.

This great site offers one-stop shopping for students and teachers looking for free textbooks and related materials.

You’ll find links to textbooks and select educational resources of all kinds. Some of the books are PDF files, others are viewable only online as e-books. Most books are aimed at undergraduates, but there are at least a few resources at every level, from kindergarten to post-doc.

All of the books are offered for free by their respective copyright holders for online viewing.

Civil Rights History Made Here

September 4, 2006 – 21:42 pm

Woolworths - Greensboro, NC

This past weekend, my wife and I took another trip to North Carolina. This time our end destination was the North Carolina Zoo, located in Ashboro, NC. We traveled south on Sunday and stayed over in Greensboro. Since we arrived early, we decided to head downtown and check out the sites.

Greenboro appears to be a city on the move, with major renovations in various stages of completion. The downtown area is comprised of new high-rise buildings that house practically every major major bank, insurance company and investment company in the South. Since it was Sunday and Labor Day weekend, most of the businesses had closed by the time we took our walk. However, we did experience a pleasant surprise.

Growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, I can distinctly remember the civil rights struggles of blacks throughout the United States. Of course there were several defining moments in that struggle. The country recently honored Rosa Parks who refused to surrender her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama 40 years ago – triggering a bus boycott that lasted 381 days.

I remembered another defining moment but I had forgotten that it took place in Greensboro, NC. Feb. 1, 1960 began as an ordinary day in Greensboro, N.C., but four black freshman students at North Carolina’s Agricultural and Technical College began something extraordinary. The four original protesters were Ezell Blair, Jr., Franklin McCain, Joseph McNeil, and David Richmond.

These students walked into F. W. Woolworth’s, sat at the ‘Whites Only’ lunch counter, and ordered food. They were refused service, but stayed until closing.

Another set of students returned the next day, and another the next, as increasingly large numbers joined the protest. By day four, three white female students from a neighboring school joined in. By day five, more than 300 demonstrators showed up. Woolworth’s responded with half-hearted offers of concession. Dissatisfied, the students continued their sit-in.

The city of Greensboro responded with stricter segregation laws, and 45 students were arrested and charged with trespassing. This only fueled the protests, as students launched massive boycotts of segregated lunch counters across the city. Store revenues fell sharply, and storeowners were ultimately forced to give in.

Six months after that fateful February day, something else extraordinary happened. Those same four freshmen returned to Woolworth’s and were served lunch. The rest, as they say, is history. It was serendipitous that we ended up walking past the very place where history was made.

Oh, by the way, if you want to visit a zoo, go to the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Although the North Carolina Zoo was a great place to walk, we didn’t see nearly the number of animals that we expected to see. The zoo is set in a natual habitat so there is not guarantee that you will see the animals. I think many of the parents found out that their kids lost interest very quickly based on the amount of crying we heard. Also if you think the $10 per person entrance fee is a little steep, wait until you get inside and order one of those $2.50 drinks. My advice – bring a picnic lunch.

Use Google for More Than Just Searches

September 2, 2006 – 21:44 pm

Since Google is now listed as a verb in the dictionary, it is safe to say most people know that they can do web searches using Google. However, many computer users don’t realize that the search box can be used for a variety of other purposes.

First, you can perform calculations with Google. For example, if you want to add 22 and 159, you would enter “22+159” (without the quotes) in the search box, click search and your answer will be returned.

You can also multiply using the “*” and divide using the “/”. If you are so inclined, you can even do complex calculations like finding square root using “(sqrt 142)”. You can also calculate powers using “2^4” to find two to the power of four.

Google can also do conversions. For instance, if you want to know how many liters are in a gallon. Simply type “1 gallon in liters” and press Search button to get your answer.

Use the same technique for converting currencies. To calculate the dollar to Euro exchange rate, enter “1 Euro in USD.”

This is just a sample of how you can get the most out of Google. If you know any others, take a moment to add a comment by clicking on the Comments link below.

Social Security Facts: A Tool for Law Enforcement Officers

August 25, 2006 – 21:28 pm

Jon Cliborne, my buddy from Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy, forwarded this short pamphet that was put together by CBP Officer Michael R. Fowlkes for use by cops.  It probably contains most of the info you will ever need to know about social security cards and numbers.  This is a quick read but make sure you keep a copy in your briefcase for reference.

Try This Keyboard Shortcut List for Word

August 24, 2006 – 6:18 am

i like to use keyboard shorcuts to perform tasks that normally take two or three mouse clicks – if I can remember where the commands are located. Unfortunately, I can usually only remember the handful of keyboard shortcuts that I use regularly. So whats an old guy to do? I usually keep a keyboard shortcut list around for the programs that I use the most. I just came across the best shortcut list I have ever seen for use with Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, I don’t know who to give credit for developing this great shortcut list. Here are both of the keyboard shortcut lists I use.
