Prepare to Donate Your Computer

November 29, 2005 – 6:27 am

If you are planning to donate an old computer to a charity to receive a tax deduction, make sure you prepare it properly.

If you use FDISK, FORMAT utilities, or DELETE standard operating system command for data removal, there is always a chance to recover deleted data (using undelete file or some data recovery software) and use against the owner’s will.

I highly recommend you to run this FREE utility for the hard and floppy drives you want to dispose of, recycle, re-use, sell or donate to somebody.

You will need to reinstall the operating system after using this utility. You should either have the installation disk or a restore disk that came with your computer. Just put the disk in, reboot your computer and follow the on-screen directions.

Website: Sending Pictures Through E-mail

November 28, 2005 – 6:20 am

I know all of you who receive digital cameras for Christmas will want to share your photographic masterpieces but remember sending those high resolution pics is very poor e-mail etiquette. Even with broadband, they slow e-mail downloads.

Instead, try Dropload to transfer large files. Just sign up, then you can upload any file up to 100 megabytes. The recipient will receive an e-mail notification to download the file within seven days. The best part is that Dropload is free!

Taskbar Clean Up

November 27, 2005 – 17:28 pm

Are you a taskbar “piggy”? Is your taskbar loaded with icons? Here is a tip to help clean things up. Right click an open space on your taskbar (the blue bar at the bottom of the screen where the “Start” button is located) and choose “Properties“. On the Taskbar tab under “Taskbar appearances”, click “Group similar taskbar buttons” and click “OK“.

Once you make this adjustment, Windows will stack multiple Word docs or IE sessions within one taskbar button. It’s not as good as Firefox’s tabbed browser but its as good as Windows gets for now.

The Choking Game

November 27, 2005 – 10:46 am

Initially ruled a suicide, 13-year-old Chelsea Dunn may have accidentally killed herself by what some kids call a game.

?They call it something dreaming,? says twenty-year-old Kelly Pilger. Sarah Johnson remembers, ?They call it fainting each other.?

Self-asphyxiation-choking each other or themselves, which produces a kind of high. ?Press people up against a wall, until they didn?t have any oxygen, until they passed out,? describes Kelly. Jessica Fuller says ?[they] probably do it for about four hours at a time, like repeatedly, over and over again.?

They use bags, belts, ties, or even their own bare hands, causing hypoxia, a shortage of oxygen. ?Basically, it?s a very dangerous play where the person deprives his brain of oxygen,? explains Dr. Ashraf Attalla, child psychiatrist, ?By reducing the blood pressure the brain basically starts an irreversible process of dying.?

And he says the result can be permanent brain damage, or in cases like Chelsea Dunn- death.

Obviously there is no drug test, but there are clues that parents need to watch for. ?Any unusual marks around the neck. Parents might find some ties, or ropes tied in unusual ways, complaints of headaches, blood shot eyes,? explains Dr. Attalla.

He says some kids may be fascinated by this strange and dangerous play. As Sarah Johnson says, ?It?s something that?s not talked about, it?s not well known, and there?s a lure to that.?

And that?s why experts say- take away the mystery. Teach your kids that this is no game. ?It?s a very, very dangerous practice,? says the doctor, ?and I think the community and parents need to know about this.?

Website: Library Thing

November 21, 2005 – 7:04 am

I like to read a good book but I also hate spending the money for new books. I love to pick up inexpensive books at library sales or second hand book stores. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for me to buy a book and when I start reading it, discover that I’ve already read it.

I guess I’m not the only one because the folks at Library Thing have designed a website for people like me. The site helps me manage my books. Just register and add your books to your personal on-line library. It’s simple, type in a few keywords and select your book from a list of results.

Library Thing uses the Amazon database, so your books are probably in there. You can include keyword tags with your book descriptions to help you organize books by subject or location.

Try using a “read” or “unread” tag to help you remember which book you have read. They also include book reviews and comments from other members.
