Website: Swapthing

August 27, 2005 – 6:12 am

I hesitated to put this site up here since the last thing some of you (my wife) need is a way to trade your junk for someone else’s junk. However, after some reflection, I decided it was better to send “some” of you junk out the door in exchange for the junk you receive. This is opposed to Ebay where you actually have to pay for someone else’s junk. So here it is – proceed with caution.

Data Saved on CD May Not Be Safe

August 25, 2005 – 7:20 am

You have backed up all of your photos and critical data to CDs or DVDs so they are safe – right? Well, maybe not. CDs and DVDs that are burned could have a short life. The “burning” process uses a laser to inscribe information on the disc. The result is read as 1’s and 0’s by the laser on playback. Although there is no definitive evidence (studies are under way), there have been numerous reports of data loss from CDs and DVDs as a result of deterioration of the write layer.

You may want to re-burn your critical disks yearly. You don’t have to worry about book on CD etc since they are molded (not burned) and should last for many years.

Fixing Word’s Little Nuisances

August 13, 2005 – 14:54 pm

Word has a lot of great features but there are a few that cause you to just pause and ask, “Why?”. For instance, when you copy and paste something, Word displays the Paste Options button. This gives you the option of changing the formatting. I don’t want to change the formatting. Meanwhile, the button, which is in the way, is difficult to clear.

Another is Word’s ScreenTips. This box pops up when you mouse over a link. It includes the name of the link, which is already in front of you. It also tells you to use the Ctrl key when you click the link. I already know that. The box is so big it sometimes blocks the link.

Well, Marcus, to disable these things, open Word and click Tools>>Options. Select the View tab. Clear the ScreenTips box. Then select the Edit tab. Clear the box next to “Show Paste Options buttons.” Click OK.

The Sisyphus Comments has posts that cover a wide variety of topics. If you remember reading a previous post, you can easily find the post using the search box in the sidebar located on the right side of blog. For instance, if you are making an on-line purchase, you may want to check the coupon websites that we listed in our July 19, 2005 post to see if you can find a discount code. Just scroll down to the search box and type in the word “coupon” (without the “”) then click the “Search” button. The search engine will return any posts that contain the word “coupon”. You can do the same thing using any key word from a previous post.

Turn Off Automatic Bullets or Numbering In Word

August 7, 2005 – 9:59 am

Is it a nuisance to have Word automatically assume that you want “bullets” or numbers? If you know how to create bullets/numbers when you need them, you can permanently turn off the automatic feature.

Turning off bullets and numbering is easy. Use the Tools/AutoCorrect Options in Word 2002 or 2003 (use Tools/AutoCorrect in Word 2000), then select the “AutoFormat As You Type” tab.

In the middle of the dialog box you’ll find the “Apply As You Type” section. Turn off the desired option by un-checking the “Automatic Bulleted Lists” and/or “Automatic Numbered Lists” boxes. Now, when you type a pair of “two hyphens and some text,” Word won’t turn the items into a bulleted list.
