Maybe The Aliens Didn’t Build Stonehenge

April 10, 2008 – 5:55 am

My buddy David Wells turned me on to this video which is really incredible. Just when we get to thinking that we are so advanced with our electronic gadgets, some lost art like this is rediscovered and we find out that maybe we aren’t as advanced as we think we are. It’s amazing what a man can accomplish with a plumb, a square and little bit of knowledge.

Touch Up Your Photos For Free

April 9, 2008 – 5:55 am

Photoshop ExpressIt always tickles me when people or businesses run out to buy the latest upgrade of programs like Microsoft Word. The vast majority of normal users probably only use about 25% of the features in these programs. When it comes to programs like photo editors, most of us use ever few of the available features.

Although I know how to use features like layers, for the most part I find myself using a my photo editor to crop, resize and remove red eye from my digital photos. That’s why I wouldn’t even consider spending $900 to buy Photoshop, the industry standard in photo editors. I think Adobe understands that their flagship program is more than most of us need and it has a pretty steep learning curve.

Enter the new web-based edition of Photoshop Express. All you have to do is upload your photos to edit them. This dumbed down version of Photoshop is easy to use and offers a variety of options. After you finish editing your photos, you can e-mail them or make them available via your personal photo gallery. Adobe even gives you two gigabytes of free photo storage to get started. You get access to all this for FREE (as in beer). Check it out.

Speed Things Up On Your Side of the Keyboard

April 6, 2008 – 5:55 am

Computer TipsYou don’t need to buy a new computer in order to speed up your computing tasks. You may be able to increase your productivity by learning to use your computer more efficiently. For instance, most newer computer keyboards have a Windows key located between the Ctrl and Alt keys on the bottom row of the keyboard. The Windows key can help you speed up your computing tasks – for example:

To minimize all applications: Press Windows + D
To restore the applications again: Press Windows + Shift + M
To open a Windows Explorer window: Press Windows + E
To lock down your system: Press Windows + L

You can also use some key commands to speed up your browsing in Firefox by automatically completing your URL addresses. Just type the web address minus the www. and .com. Then hit Control + Enter on a Windows computer or Command + Return on a Mac to complete the URL.

For .net addresses hit Shift + Enter in Windows and Shift + Return on a Mac.

For .org addresses hit Control + Shift + Enter in Windows and Control + Shift + Return on a Mac.

Finally, wouldn’t it be nice to have more than one default home page for your browser. If you use Firefox, you can set multiple websites to open when you open the browser or hit the Home button in your navigation toolbar. To set up multiple home pages:

Click on Tools>>Main>>Type each website in the Home Page box, one after the other but separated by the vertical bar “|” (Shift + \).

When you push the Home button, all of your pages will be opened in separate tabs. If you precede the entire address with a vertical bar “|”, Firefox will open the web pages using a new tab and won’t use the current open tab.

Our National Anthem – Sing It Proudly

March 30, 2008 – 5:55 am

We all have those “pet peeves” – you know those things that we really feel strongly about. I usually enjoy experiencing the work of creative people. In fact, I try never to run the same lap in the same manner myself.

However, I draw the line when it comes to our national anthem. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I don’t think an entertainer should change the national anthem to impress us with their creativity. Until now, my favorite version of our nation anthem was performed by Whitney Houston. However, I may have discovered a new favorite versions. The Cactus Cuties are a girls singing group from Lubbock, TX. The girls are all 13 or younger. Check out this performance at a basketball game.

Sad Truth About Relationships

This has nothing to do with cops or technology other than the fact that it is on the internet. It would be hilarious if it weren’t so close to being true.

Expand Your Horizons – Check Out The Archives

March 19, 2008 – 5:56 am

CommunicationOver the last few years, I have built up quite a sizable group of regular readers here at The Sisyphus Comments. However, many readers just check-in each day to take a look at my daily blog articles and never explore the blog archives.

Well, its time to do a little exploring. Last summer, I wrote a series of articles on a subject that probably has more of an impact on productivity than any other factor – communication. To check out the articles, just type the word “communication” into the search box at the top of the right column then click on the “Search” button.

You can also check out other topical articles by clicking on any of the Category links in the right column. Why not set a goal to learn one new thing each day? Have fun!

If You Only Watch One Video – Make This It!

March 19, 2008 – 5:55 am

Randy PauschOccasionally, you can find a video on YouTube or Google Video that doesn’t involve dumb people getting hit in the genitals. In fact, you may even get lucky and find something with some educational value. However, if you only watch one video this year, make it Randy Paush’s Last Lecture. It is one of the most inspirational videos that I have ever seen.

Randy Pausch is a virtual reality pioneer, human-computer interaction researcher, co-founder of CMU’s Entertainment Technology Center, and creator of the Alice software project. He is also suffering from terminal pancreatic cancer.

Crater Academy, Instructor Development and Grocery Lists

March 16, 2008 – 5:55 am

PresenterA while back, I had the pleasure of visiting the Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy, a regional criminal justice academy located in Disputanta, VA, to teach an Instructor Development course. There were fifteen instructor candidates from a variety of agencies enrolled in the course and they definitely earned their stripes.

I designed a prerequisite on-line training course that included a PowerPoint tutorial, a couple of classes that were intended to prepare the instructor candidates for the challenges of teaching adult students and an overview of Crater’s training related policies. Once the course began, they also had online access to all of the PowerPoint files I used to instruct them throughout the week.

In addition to learning the basics of adult oriented instruction, each student presented a three minute impromptu speech about a random object I gave them, a five minute speech on an assigned topic and a twenty minute speech on the criminal justice related topic of their choosing. For both the five minute and twenty minute presentations, they were required to submit a lesson plan cover sheet, a typed lesson plan, a PowerPoint presentation, handouts and test questions.

The goal of the course was to make as many mistakes as possible during this week so they could avoid making similar mistakes when they instructed under real conditions. The critiques for the impromptu and the five minute speeches were done “American Idol” style so that all of the students could benefit from the mistakes of each presenter. By the time we got to the twenty minute presentations on Thursday afternoon, the instructor candidates had it down cold but it took a lot of hard work to achieve that level of proficiency. Of course, we also had that final written exam to contend with on Friday morning. However, after a lot of blood, sweat and tears (and a couple nights with very little sleep), the Crater staff was happy to welcome a bunch of great new members to their instructional cadre.

During the week, a few students had some difficulty understanding the difference between the amount of content that should be in the lesson plan versus the amount that should be in the PowerPoint presentation. One of my pet peeves is when a presenter uses a PowerPoint presentation as a TelePrompTer instead of using bullet points. It is a well documented fact that using a properly designed audio-visual aid will significantly increase the students’ retention of the course material. However, if an instructor uses an improperly designed presentation, it can actually have a negative influence on the retention rate.

I finally came up with an analogy that helped the students grasp how a lesson plan and a PowerPoint presentation should be used to improve the quality of instruction so I thought I would share it with those of you that are responsible for training new instructors. To explain the amount of detail that should be included in a lesson plan, I told the students to imagine that they wanted me to go to the store to do their weekly grocery shopping.

In order for me to properly do their grocery shopping, they would have to provide me very specific instructions. For instance, they would have to describe the vehicle that they wanted me drive to the store including its make, model, color and where it was parked in the lot. Since I was not familiar with the area, they would have to provide me with detailed directions so I could drive to the correct grocery store. Next, they would have to describe the quantity and brand of each item that they wanted me to purchase to insure that I would purchase the items that they desired. If you imagine these instructions laid out in an outline format, it would be analogous to the amount of detail that should be included in a lesson plan at a regional academy.

lesson plan example

We need this type of detail in the lesson plan because a substitute instructor may be called upon to teach the class if the normal instructor is not available for some reason. A detailed lesson plan helps to insure that a similarly qualified substitute instructor will be able to instruct the course in essentially the same manner as the regular instructor.

On the other hand, the PowerPoint presentation should more closely resemble the student’s own shopping lists. For instance, instead of the detailed description of the the types of fruit that they would have to provide to me (the lesson plan), their own list would probably read, “Fruit – apples, bananas, and oranges.”

PowerPoint example

The PowerPoint presentation should only be used as a visual aid to help increase the students’ retention rate. I believe that this analogy helped those students that were having difficulty understanding how a lesson plan and a PowerPoint presentation should be used to enhance the learning experience. An effective instructor will combine his personal knowledge and experiences, the information contained in the lesson plan and the PowerPoint presentation to provide a well organized and insightful block of instruction.

I had a great week and it was a lot of fun to be back in the classroom instructing such a great group of highly motivated students. I want to thank the the entire staff at Crater Criminal Justice Training Academy for their hospitality throughout the week. I believe we graduated a fantastic group of motivated new instructors that will be a great addition to the Crater instructional cadre in the future.

Safe Websites May Not Be Safe

March 11, 2008 – 5:55 am

News HandoffJust when you thought it was safe to play on the internet, the AP is reporting you may not be as safe as you thought.

If you are like most computer users, you probably thought you were safe when you visited a website where a small padlock appeared in the corner of your web browser’s address bar or the entire bar turned green . . . wrong. Read the full story.

Tweak Firefox For Faster Browsing

March 7, 2008 – 5:55 am

FirefoxIf you use the free Firefox browser (like I recommend) and you could use a little speed boost, I have a tip for you. Thanks goes out to Patrick Norton of the Tekzilla podcast on this speed enhancement tweak.

First, open Firefox and type “about:config” (no quotes) in the browser window. Next, type “network.http” in the Filter window.

Next, under Preference Name, double-click on the line of text “network.http.pipelining” to change its value from “false” to “true.” Then, double-click on the line of text “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to change its value from “false” to “true.”

Firefox Tweak
Next, double-click on the line of text “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests.” A window will pop up with a number in it (probably 4) – click in the box and change this number to “30“, then click “OK” to close the window.
Firefox Tweak
Finally, shut down the Firefox program and restart it to see the difference. Try a high graphics website like CNN if you want to really see the speed difference.

Does Muzzle Position Constitute Use-of-Force?

February 29, 2008 – 5:55 am

Roll Call TrainingIn several previous articles, I have encouraged law enforcement supervisors to take advantage of roll call to squeeze in a few minutes of training. The internet is a treasure trove of useful information that can be used to put together a quick training course. Recently, Ken Wallentine, a police officer, former prosecutor and Chief of Law Enforcement for the Utah Attorney General, wrote an article for PoliceOne.com that would be a great resource for a roll call training session.

This article discusses the relevant use-of-force legal parameters law enforcement must function within and how they affect muzzle position. Mr. Wallentine examines the legalities surrounding a situation where an officer points a firearm at a person when the officer is not imminently prepared to fire. He also includes case references to support the positions that are stated in the article.

Speed Up Your Computing With Quick Launch Bar

February 27, 2008 – 5:55 am

Quick LaunchAre you considering shelling out a bunch of money to buy a high powered computer to help you work and play faster? Well, the secret to faster computing may not lie with a new multi-core processor. You might be much better off learning to use the software tools that you already have on your computer than buying a new computer. Every now and then, I like to discuss some computer basics that can help you get things done more efficiently – like using Quick Launch

The Quick Launch bar is the area of the Taskbar directly beside the Start button. By default, it contains shortcuts to programs you probably use frequently such as Internet Explorer but you can add the items of your choice. The benefit of adding items to the Quick Launch bar is that you access them with a single click.

How to set up Quick Launch

  1. To activate Quick Launch, right click on the Start button
  2. Click on Properties in the popup shortcut menu
  3. Click on the Taskbar tab
  4. Click on Show Quick Launch
  5. Uncheck Lock the taskbar so that you can add shortcuts to new files or programs
  6. Uncheck Hide inactive icons
  7. Click on the OK button. (some standard icons may appear in the Quick Launch area)
  8. To put a new item in the Quick Launch area, right-click on the file or program and drag the icon for that item to the Quick Launch area of the Taskbar and choose ‘copy here’ in the subsequent shortcut menu (an item will be created and added to the area)

If you are a power user, you can move your Quick Launch bar to your desktop to free up space on your Taskbar. A desktop Quick Launch enables you to have larger icons. To move your Quick Launch to the desktop:

  1. Make sure the Taskbar is unlocked by right clicking on a blank area of the Taskbar and unchecking “Lock the Taskbar.”
  2. Click and hold on the dots on the Taskbar (between the start menu and the Quick Launch area) and drag to your desktop. You can move it anywhere you want on you desktop.

Another great option is the ObjectDock program that gives you an animated launchbar/taskbar on your screen that works when you mouse over it. This is a great way to organize the files you use frequently so you have quick access to them. Did I mention that ObjectDock is free (as in beer). Be sure to check it out at NewFreeDownloads.com and take a minute to explore the other free programs.
