Using Secure Passwords

March 25, 2005 – 6:52 am

Many folks don’t seem to realize the importance of selecting a secure password. Instead they use passwords that are easy for them to remembers like a birthdate, the name of a pet or child or some other personal data. Unfortunately, this also makes it easy for someone else to guess your password. Hackers also use dictionary programs in an effort to discover passwords.

So what constitutes a secure password? Ideally, you should use at least eight random characters that includes a mix of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers and punctuation marks. Unfortunately, these rules also make passwords hard to remember so you will need a secure or encrypted location to store your passwords. NEVER disclose your user name or password to a stranger over the internet or telephone.

Texas Sues Voice Over IP Vender for 911 Problem

March 24, 2005 – 19:59 pm

Texas sued the nation’s largest Internet-based phone service provider Tuesday, saying Vonage failed to clearly inform customers they cannot automatically dial 911 when they sign up.

The lawsuit follows a case last month when a 17-year-old Houston girl was unable to call 911 on her family’s Vonage service during an armed robbery in which her parents were shot and wounded. The girl ran to a neighbor’s home and called for help.

Assigning a Drive Letter To a USB Drive

March 24, 2005 – 19:49 pm

Here is a convenient tip for those of you who are using a flash memory usb drive (jump, thumb etc.). When you install the drive (plug it in) Windows XP assigns it a drives letter. Here’s how to reassign drive letters:

1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Choose Manage.
3. Click Disk Management.
4. Right-click the drive you want to rename.
5. Select Change Drive Letter or Path.
6. Select your new drive letter.

You cannot change a drive letter to a drive letter that already exists, and you cannot change your boot drive (C). I assign my usb drive the letter “B”. In the olden days, the “B” drive was usually a 5.25 inch floppy. Since we quit using the 5.25 drive, the drive letter tends to go unassigned. Once you set it to “B”, everytime you plug it in, it will show up as the “B” drive.

March 12, 2005 – 22:25 pm

We have all tried to do a Google search and ended up with hits listing millions of pages. Then we try to refine the search and we get nothing. Well here are a couple of hints to help with the search.

Google will ignore common words, single letters and single numbers. To include them in the search, enclose them in quotes, for examples: “male and female”.

To search for one item or another use capital OR, for example: male OR female.

Finally, if you place a tilda “~” in front of a word, Google will search for that word and its synonym.

Law Enforcement Oath of Honor

March 8, 2005 – 18:16 pm

On my honor, I will never betray my badge, my integrity, my character, or the public trust.

I will always have the courage to hold myself and others accountable for our actions.
I will always uphold the Constitution, the community and the agency I serve, so help me God.

Developed by the International Association of Chiefs of Police Committee on Police Ethics

Before Police Officers take upon themselves the “LAW ENFORCEMENT OATH OF HONOR,” it is vital that they understand what it truly means. An oath is a solemn pledge someone voluntarily makes when they sincerely intend to do what they say. The key words in the “LAW ENFORCEMENT OATH OF HONOR” are defined thusly:

HONOR means giving one’s word as a bond and guarantee.

BETRAY is defined as breaking faith and proving false.

The BADGE is a visible-symbol of the power of your office.

INTEGRITY is firm adherence to principles, both in our private and public life.

CHARACTER means the qualities and standards of behavior that distinguish an individual.

The PUBLIC TRUST is a duty imposed in faith to those we are sworn to serve.

COURAGE is having the “heart,” the mental, and the moral strength to venture, persevere, withstand, and overcome danger, difficulty, and fear.

ACCOUNTABILITY means that we are answerable and responsible for our actions.

COMMUNITY is the municipalities, neighborhoods, and citizens we serve.

Making Shortcuts for Your Desktop

March 8, 2005 – 17:21 pm

Shortcuts are placed on the desktop. That’s what the monitor shows when you start the computer. Typically, you double-click the shortcut, and a program or file opens.

So, let’s say you want to create a shortcut to Outlook Express. Programs are easy. Click Start>>All Programs. Find Outlook Express in the list and right-click it. Select Sent to>>Desktop (create shortcut). Voila, a shortcut!

Well, what if you have your budget in an Excel spreadsheet? If you were to create a shortcut to Excel, that would open a blank spreadsheet. You need a shortcut to your budget file.

In this case, right-click the desktop. Click New>>Shortcut. Click Browse and find the file. Double-click it. Click Next. Enter a name for the shortcut and click Finish.

You can launch a program even quicker from the Quick Launch bar. That is to the right of the Start button. If the Quick Launch area isn’t visible, right- click Start and select Properties. Select the Taskbar tab. Check the box next to Show Quick Launch.

Word Keyboard Shortcuts

March 8, 2005 – 6:16 am

I’m a fan of keyboard shortcuts, trying to move my hands from the keyboard to the mouse as seldom as possible.

There are many buttons on the formatting toolbar that I do choose to use, and I like to select them without using the mouse. Fortunately, the keyboard shortcuts are easy to remember:

Ctrl + Shift + S selects the Style drop-down list. Once selected I can use the up and down arrow keys to select the desired style, then press Enter.

Ctrl + Shift + F selects the Font drop-down list. As with Style, I use the up/down/enter keys to make a change to selected text.

Ctrl + Shift + P selects the font size. To remember this shortcut, think: “P stands for point size
” of the font.
