A Little Gun Wisdom

February 20, 2009 – 5:55 am

Gun WisdomA good friend of mine passed this along to me. Although I am not as enthusiastic about gun issues as some of my friends [Scott], I did find it amusing. Unfortunately, I don’t know the source of theses pearls of wisdom.

The final weapon is the brain…All else is supplemental.

  1. Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you. [Rich’s Note: I liked this one in particular]
  2. If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.
  3. I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.
  4. When seconds count, the cops are just minutes away.
  5. A reporter did a human-interest piece on the Texas Rangers. The reporter recognized the Colt Model 1911 the Ranger was carrying and asked him ‘Why do you carry a 45?’ The Ranger responded, ‘Because they don’t make a 46.
  6. The old sheriff was attending an awards dinner when a lady commented on his wearing his sidearm. ‘Sheriff, I see you have your pistol. Are you expecting trouble?’ ‘No Ma’am. If I were expecting trouble, I would have brought my shotgun.’
  7. Beware the man who only has one gun. HE PROBABLY KNOWS HOW TO USE IT!!!

The words of wisdom went on to say:

I was once asked by a lady visiting if I had a gun in the house. I said I did. She said ‘Well I certainly hope it isn’t loaded!’ To which I said, of course it is loaded, can’t work without bullets!’ She then asked, ‘Are you that afraid of someone evil coming into your house?’ My reply was, ‘No not at all. I am not afraid of the house catching fire either, but I have fire extinguishers around, and they are all loaded too.’ To which I’ll add, having a gun in the house that isn’t loaded is like having a car in the garage without gas in the tank.

Even if you aren’t a gun advocate, you got to admit there is some wisdom in these comments.

Why Socialism Doesn’t Work

February 13, 2009 – 5:55 am

SocialismA friend of mine sent me the following quote from an economist friend of his uncle’s. It is definitely a timely and wise pearl of wisdom.

“You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

Target Your Job Search With LinkUp

January 23, 2009 – 5:55 am

LinkUpIf you are a job hunter, you have probably checked out the thousands of jobs available on sites like Monster.com. If you have, you have also probably come to the realization that many of the jobs posted there are on the lower end of the economic scale and the competition is a little keen.

The Golden Telephone

January 22, 2009 – 13:05 pm

SteelersA man in Topeka , Kansas decided to write a book about Churches around the country. He started by flying to San Francisco and started working east from there.

Going to a very large church, he began taking photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign which read “Calls: $10,000 a minute.”

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way. As he continued to visit churches in Seattle , Dallas , St. Louis , Chicago , Milwaukee , and around the United States , he found more phones with the same sign, and the same a nswer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in Pennsylvania . Upon entering a Church in Pittsburgh , he saw the usual golden telephone. But THIS time, the sign read “Calls: $0.35 cents.”

Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor. “Father Jones, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only $0.35 cents a call. Why?

The priest, smiling benignly, replied : “Son, you’re in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania now, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers — 5 times Super Bowl Champions, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3 vibrant rivers meeting at the Point of the most beautiful downtown area around, the city with the best hospitals, neighborhoods and friendliest people in the world! You’re in God’s Country….It’s a local call.”

Beer and Politics

December 17, 2008 – 5:55 am

Beer-Give Your Brain the Night OffMy younger brother who lives in Pennsylvania usually appears pretty sane – I mean if you don’t know him well. However, if they ever start a new campaign to “Just Say No To Beer”, he will be the poster boy.

I think most people know that when you consume alcohol you kill brain cells. Fortunately, we have so many unused brain cells that the damage generally goes unnoticed. However, if you drink enough beer over a long enough period of time, the impact of killing all those brain cells begins to manifest itself in the form of bazaar thoughts or actions.

I was just beginning to think that he had stopped drinking in time to limit the damage to his brain when he sent me an e-mail that pretty much confirmed that this was not the case. This is what he wrote:

Something to think about ……

You know what would really PISS OFF the democrats…

Bush should resign now.

Then Dick Cheney becomes president (that would really PISS OFF the liberals)!!!

Then he appoints Condoleeza Rice as vice president.

Then Cheney resigns two weeks later and Condoleeza Rice, a republican, becomes the first BLACK president and the first WOMAN president !!!

I am sure that will teach them a lesson, bro. Beer – When you want to give your brain the night off!

Child Safety Products At BulletBlocker.com

November 28, 2008 – 5:56 am

Bullet BlockerI recently met a former cop on Cops Online and he has started a business that carries a rather unique product line – bullet resistant backpacks, etc. for kids. I though it was a rather novel idea, although it is a sad commentary on our society that the products may be needed.

I thought I would pass along a little info about a holiday sale he is having online only. Their line of Threat Level 3a Bullet Resistant Products (that’s protection from 99% of all handgun rounds) is on sale until 11:59pm on 30 November 2008!

These unique safety products are made to be on hand in case of emergencies by incorporating the anti-ballistic material, like the bulletproof vests worn by almost all law enforcement officers, into products kids all already use, like backpacks, purses, or courier bags. They also offer a full line of high quality backpacks, attaches, notebook liners and handy folios with our panels built right in! They are not to be found in stores anywhere! Check out his Website.

How To Burn An ISO Image To CD/DVD

November 20, 2008 – 5:55 am

Burning An ISO ImageI recently purchased the latest upgrade of Parallel’s Desktop virtualization software. This program allows me to run an installation of Windows on my MacBook. Unfortunately, I have to have access to Windows XP so I can run a piece of critical software that I use for designing on-line training courses that is not available for the Mac operation system. However, that is a issue for another article.

What I want to discuss in this article is the use of ISO Disc images. ISO images are used by software developers to distribute their software programs over the internet. For instance, if you decide to give a new Linux distribution a whirl, you will need to download a disc image in ISO format and burn it to a blank CD-ROM or DVD.

Like so many computer tasks, burning an ISO image to a CD/DVD is not difficult if you know what you are doing. If you are using a computer with a Windows operating system, you will need a software program like Nero to burn an ISO to a disk. When you use Nero to burn an ISO to disc, the process is fairly obvious. You just insert a blank disk, select the ISO file and click “Burn ISO Image to CD.”

If you own a Mac, the process is a little different regardless of whether you use most Mac disc utilities or the OSX native Disk Utility. Here is how to burn an ISO image to a disc:

  1. Insert a blank disc.
  2. Start Disk Utility (located under Applications).
  3. From the File menu, choose Open Disk Image and select the ISO to be burned.
  4. In the list of volumes, you will now see an item representing the ISO file. Select it.
  5. Click the Burn button and follow the instructions.

I do not think burning an ISO to a disk is more simple on one operating system than on the other, the processes are just different. Once you know how to do it, the process is fairly simple regardless of whether you use a Windows, Linux or Mac operation system.
