Get Your Free Credit Score and Good Karma

June 22, 2008 – 5:55 am

CreditKarma.comYou can hardly pick up a newspaper that does not contain an article about the poor state of the economy. Whether or not you agree with the assessments that the economic sky is falling, pretty much everyone agrees that getting a home loan is a little more difficult these days. This is why you really need to keep an eye on your credit standing.

In a previous article (Have You Checked Your Credit Report Lately?), I told you how to get a free copy of your credit report from all three major reporting bureaus each year. It is important to monitor your credit report to help prevent identity theft and protect your credit rating. However, when it comes time to get a loan, it is your credit “score” that lenders really want to check out. Your credit score can have a significant impact on how much it costs you to borrow money.

Until now, you had to pay to find out your credit score. Fortunately, CreditKarma.com has changed all that by providing you with a free credit score from one of the three major credit bureaus. They can even help you monitor your score over time so you always know where you stand.

Of course you have probably been around long enough to realize that there is no such thing as a free lunch. CreditKarma makes their money through advertising. They provide you with special offers that are tailored to you based on your credit score. The offers may be useful if you are looking for things like a lower interest rate on a credit card or a special deal from your cable company. Check it out.

HP Smart Web Page Printing

June 21, 2008 – 5:55 am

Hewlett-PackardThe beauty of bookmarks, is that they almost eliminate the need to print web pages. However, no matter how you feel about the need to save the trees, sooner or later you are going to have to print a web page.

I hate when I have to print a web page because I get advertisements, photos and other trash that I don’t need. Well the folks at Hewlett-Packard must have felt my pain because they came up with a neat little tool to make printing a web page a little easier.

The HP Smart Web Printing lets you select portions of a web page that you want to print or save to print later. Better yet, you can even print selections from several sites on a single piece of paper! Unfortunately, it only works on the Windows platform so us Mac users are left out in the cold. Check it out.

Sometimes You Should Read The Manual

June 20, 2008 – 5:55 am

Safemanuals.comI would guess very few owners of gadgets and appliances take the time to actually read the manual. However, unless you are an extreme geek, you will probably run into an issue or two with your cell phone, mp3 player, sound system or some other appliance that will require a quick check of the manual. So the manual does come in handy, even if you do not read it from cover to cover.

Unfortunately, since we have so many gadgets these days, it is easy to misplace a manual. In addition, if you buy a used device, the original owner may not include the manual.

I usually Google the problem but their may be an even better on-line solution. Surf on over to SafeManuals.com, the repository for manuals from over 3,000 manufacturers. You may be able to locate the original owners manual for your device. How great is that? Check them out.

How To Make Your Workplace Fun

June 15, 2008 – 5:55 am

With the price of gas, this might be a good alternative for the company picnic at an amusement park. In fact, it may even be a good way for some companies to make a couple of extra dollars during their off-production time. I’m thinking of the Volvo Truck factory or some of the large SUV manufacturing facilities.

They Forget Where Their Free Speech Came From

June 14, 2008 – 5:55 am

Volcano Student Newspaper CoverMilan Woollard, the principal of Shasta High School in Northern California, said he will eliminate the student newspaper after it published a front-page photo of a student burning an American flag. He described the latest issue of the student-run Volcano as “embarrassing.”

The newspaper also included an editorial written by high school senior Connor Kennedy that defended flag burning as free speech protected by the first amendment of the Constitution. (I think they originally planned to yell “fire” in a crowded theater but scraped the idea and went with the flag burning.)

Woollard said the school had been considering eliminating the paper before it published the controversial photo as cost cutting measure. However, the students’ decision to publish the flag burning cover “cements the decision.”

In typical California fashion, lawmakers may attempt to intervene in the matter. In fact , there is a bill making its way through the legislature that would make it illegal to dismiss, transfer or otherwise punish teachers for protecting students’ free-speech rights. If it passes and the Governator signs it, the law would take effect in January.

The legislators also plan to look into the decision by the high school to stop publishing the newspaper even though lawmakers cannot force the school to fund the newspaper. Such is life in the land of fruits and nuts.

TWIT Live TV – Even Better Than Tech TV

June 3, 2008 – 5:55 am

TWIT TVA few years back, I nearly quit watching traditional television shows. Why? Well, I just couldn’t bring myself to watch another goofy situation comedy, the newest flavor of CSI or (god forbid) Cops. Instead, in my search for intellectual stimulation, I got hooked on Tech TV. Unfortunately, I was a little late to the party and Paul Allen (the co-founder of Microsoft and the owner of Tech TV) decided to dump Tech TV on G4, a video game network, who quickly disassembled everything good about the network.

To satisfy my technology information addiction, I turned to podcasts and iTunes. Now I am happy to report that I have found another new source to feed my tech information needs – TWIT TV. Leo Laporte, the former host of The Screen Savers and Call For Help on Tech TV has founded a private IP television network. He has set up a studio in his office and he is serving up 25 hours of content each week. He is still working out the production gremlins but the content in even better than what he was doing on Tech TV.

If you want to get your geek thing on, check out TWIT Live TV. You can’t beat the cost – it is FREE (as in beer).

Learning Life Lessons From A Two String Guitar

May 30, 2008 – 5:55 am

Stone Mountain SchoolOn Tuesday, I traveled to Black Mountain, NC for a tour of the Stone Mountain School (SMS). Stone Mountain is a unique long-term boarding school for boys that is set in a remote outdoor environment. They specialize in helping pre-adolescent and teen boys with learning differences or disabilities, attention deficit disorder (ADD), or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The school is nestled in the mountains, about 45 minutes east of Asheville, NC. I arrived around noon and, after a short orientation, I was assigned to the Pathfinders group. The group consisted of nine young men and two instructors. The lead instructor was retired from DuPont and, with his background in computers and data systems, he and I hit it off pretty well. The other instructor, who was a bit younger, had been a full time staff member but had recently dropped back to a substitute status. Although the two instructors came from very diverse backgrounds, different generations and had totally different personalities, they each brought a unique skill set to the table and they worked very well together.

The age of the students at the SMS ranges from 11 – 17, although the Pathfinders group consisted of young men in the lower to middle portion of this range. According to the boys in my group, most SMS students stay at the school for 12 to 18 months. Student progress is measured by tracking their personal advancement through the six tiers of the SMA Stage Model. At each stage, the student must complete several specific “requirements” in order to qualify for advancement to the next stage.

The SMS website provides the following description of the Stage Model:

”These requirements are designed for the student to demonstrate the behavioral changes they are making intrinsically. The stage model is designed so that the skills they learn become building blocks for later success. First the students learn the skill, then practice it, then maintain it and finally master it.”

It was very interesting to watch the students use the tools that they had learned to resolve conflicts within the group and facilitate interpersonal communication. SMS does not try to “mold” the behavior of their students like some of the other wilderness-based youth programs. Instead, they attempt to encourage the students to take responsibility for their actions and the consequences of their behavior, thus encouraging a more intrinsic behavioral change. Students learn to set and pursue goals, develop relationships, control their emotions and delay gratification.

However, don’t get the idea that SMS coddles the students. It would be generous to describe the living conditions on campus as “rustic.” The cinder block group cabins consist of a single room furnished with ten bunk beds. They have no indoor plumbing and they are heated using a small wood-burning stove. In addition, all of the groups (there were six groups at the time of my visit) utilize a single communal toilet and shower facility.

The students are awakened at 0620 hours and they have ten minutes to get dressed and start working on their group chores. In addition, each group is assigned certain camp chores on a rotating basis. For instance, the Pathfinders were assigned the task of cleaning the shower and toilet facility on the day that I visited.

Each group conducts group meetings at least three times per day. The purpose of these meetings is to afford the students an opportunity to vent their frustrations in a positive manner. The instructors facilitate the discussions but the students are free to bring up any issue that is on their minds. In addition, any student or instructor may call a group meeting at any time during the day if they have a need to express a concern or frustration. These group meetings serve as a positive emotional outlet for the students, many of whom have had anger management issues in the past.

Although the boys work each day to improve themselves, there are bumps in the road. SMS uses a variety of disciplinary methods to help keep the students moving forward on the road to success. Instructors can issue green, yellow and red cards for rules violations. The consequences of receiving a card may range from eating outdoors and not being permitted to receive “seconds” to being sent to primitive. The primitive area is exactly what its name implies, an isolated, unimproved camping area that is located away from the main campus. Although the student is under the constant supervision of an instructor, he is isolated from his group and sleeps in a sleeping bag under a tarpaulin shelter. His meals are also a bit on the primitive side. For breakfast, he is treated to oatmeal and both lunch and dinner consist of lentil beans and rice – everyday! The purpose of the primitive experience is to afford the student the opportunity to reflect on and reassess his behavior. Fortunately, the instructors use a broad range of intervention techniques to help the students improve their behavioral choices so going to primitive is generally a consequence of last resort.

As with any successful program, the staff is the fuel that makes the program run and the glue that holds it together. I read the material on the SMS website before I visited the campus so I had a little insight into their philosophy. While on campus, I got a deeper understanding of the SMS goals from my conversations with Eric Molino, the program manager and Micah Wheat, the recruiting coordinator. During my stay, I also met administrators, counselors, teachers and group instructors, all of whom shared a common purpose, to help the boys get their lives back on track, graduate and return to their homes.

However, I think Mr. Whitmeyer, the younger of the two Pathfinder instructors provided the best description of the SMS program. After one of the group meetings, it was raining so he and I were standing in the food shack. There was an old guitar laying on the shelf and he picked it up. I asked him who the guitar belonged to and he said it was an old school guitar. I noticed that the guitar only had two strings and I quipped, “Not much of a guitar, is it?” He strummed the two strings and responded, “I don’t know, both strings are in tune.” Then to my amazement, he started playing a song. When he was finished, he said, “I guess you have to work with what you have.” I think that would be a great motto for the Stone Mountain School.

Make A Change – Get Free Online Shipping

May 28, 2008 – 5:55 am

A couple of years ago, I watched a documentary about the use, or rather the lack of use, of mass transit in the United States. One of the social scientists opined that Americans would not change their driving habits until gasoline reached at least $4.00 per gallon (roughly a dollar per liter). At the time, I remember thinking that I would probably never live long enough to test his theory. Little did I know that price of gasoline would begin such a huge march skyward so quickly. Here we are a couple of years later and the price of gas is predicted to reach the $4.00 per gallon mark this summer.

I think it is safe to say that he was right. I started making subtle changes in my my driving habits when gas prices hit $3.00 per gallon. Before I jump in the car, I think about the most efficient way to handle all of my errands in one trip. I also make a lot fewer trips to the mall and I ride my bicycle to run as many errands as possible. I do not think I am the only one who has started making life changes as a result of the high gas prices. People are also having to make tough choices like skipping vacation trips or even changing jobs due to the high cost of automobile travel.

One way to save both time and money is to shop online as much as possible. Of course the downside of online shopping is the cost of shipping. Although the cost of shipping is offset by my gas saving, I still seek out online merchants who provide free shipping so I can save even more.

I recently found a great new website that helps me find free shipping. They list free shipping codes for many popular online stores so make sure you check them out before you make your next online purchase.

Some Really “Tweet” Changes To The Blog

May 27, 2008 – 5:55 am

TwitterOver the holiday weekend, I made a couple of changes to The Sisyphus Comments. If you scroll down the right column of the blog, you will see a new section entitled “Twitter Updates.” Now I realize that my less technically oriented readers are asking themselves, “What’s a Twitter?”

Twitter is free service that helps family and friends stay connected through the use of short (140 character or less), quick comments that let others know what you are doing. I have inserted a script in my blog that automatically posts my last five “tweets” to The Sisyphus Comments. It is sort of a live mini-blog within my blog that will allow me to easily post breaking news.

Want to join in the fun? First go to Twitter.com and sign up for your free account. Next, let your friends know that you have a Twitter account and give them your username. If they sign up, they can list you as a person they are “following” and you can do the same for them. Then every time you “tweet” it will show up on your friend’s Twitter page. When they post a “tweet”, it will show up on your Twitter page. Just log in to Twitter, leave it open in your browser, refresh it periodically and you can see what your friends and family are up to throughout the day.

When someone signs up to follow you, Twitter will send you an e-mail to let you know. You can reciprocate by choosing to also follow them or just let them follow you. As soon as you set up your account, just sign up to follow me and I will help you get started. My username is copcast. I have to warn you that Twitter is addictive, especially if you have a data plan on your cellphone.

The second change I made is not as significant from an information standpoint but it is still an important addition. Over the years, I have encouraged supervisors to use the content of the articles I post on my blog for roll call training. The only thing I ask is that you attribute the source of the information. In keeping with this philosophy, I have licensed the entire site under the Creative Commons Copyright. Just scroll down the right column until you see the “Site License” section and click on the Creative Commons image to learn more about the terms of use.

Basically, you have my permission to use the content for any non-commercial purpose. However, I also reserve the right to grant usage rights for commercial purposes if you ask nicely. So go ahead and start using the vast amount of training, supervision and computer information that is contained in the blog. Simply click on the category of your choice or use the search box to find exactly what you need for your next roll call training session.

If you find the information useful, take a moment to click on the “Comments” link at the bottom of each article and leave your thoughts.

Backup and Move Your E-mail And Bookmarks

May 25, 2008 – 5:55 am

MozBackupIt’s really exciting when you finally make the decision to pony up a few hundred (or thousand) dollars to buy a new computer. You usually end up with the latest operating system and a pretty good speed bump, so all is well, right? Not quite.

If you are using a Mac, it’s not that big of a deal. You can just download the free Carbon Copy Cloner, make a complete copy of the hard drive on your old computer and copy it to your new computer. However, if you are using a Windows computer, things get a little more challenging.

Send Larger Files With Filemail

May 22, 2008 – 5:55 am

FilemailDigital cameras have given us the ability to share pictures with family members and friends. Unfortunately, the size of these high resolution image files can create some problems. One obvious issue arises when the recipient of your photographic masterpiece is still using a dial up connection. He can forget getting the rest of his e-mail until your mega attachment finishes downloading.

Even if your recipients are all using a high speed internet connection, some online e-mail services have an inbox storage quota. However, the most frequently encountered problem is exceeding the Internet service provider’s e-mail size limit. Some ISP’s just kick the e-mail back to the sender while others strip the large attachments.

So how can you deal with this issue? Just visit Filemail where you can upload up to 2 gigabytes of data. Once you get your files or files uploaded, you just enter your recipients’ e-mail addresses and a message in the provided form and hit the send button. Your recipients will receive an e-mail with a link where they can download the files. You can even set time and download limits on the files.

You don’t need to worry about file security since your files are encrypted when they’re uploaded to the Filemail server. Did I mention that this service is FREE (as in beer)? Check it out.

Extract Text From PDF Files

May 18, 2008 – 5:55 am

PDFTextOnlineYou can find PDF files all over the internet since they are frequently used by companies and government agencies to distribute information. Content providers like the files because they work on any computer. Unlike other file formats, such as the Microsoft Word DOC files, the formatting of a PDF document doesn’t change from computer to computer, regardless of the operating system.

Many popular Windows programs and all Mac programs can print to the PDF format so they are inexpensive to produce. Companies and agencies can save paper and printing costs by simply producing PDF versions of instruction and policy manuals.

There is a down side to using PDF files though. They generally can’t be edited without expensive software like Adobe Acrobat that costs $449. Even extracting text from a PDF document can be a challenge.

One way to get around this limitation is to visit the PDFTextOnline website. It won’t make extracting the text a breeze since you will lose the formatting but at least you can import the text into a word processor where you can edit it. Just upload your PDF file to the site and PDFTextOnline will convert it to a file containing all the PDF’s text that you can download. It is not perfect but it may help out in a pinch.
