Foreclosure for Extreme Home Makeover House?

August 1, 2008 – 5:55 am

ExtremeGive a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime.

Give a man a mortgage free home and he will take out a second mortgage and be facing foreclosure four years later – or at least that’s what happened with one Extreme Home Makeover winner. A foreclosure notice was issued last week on a $450,000 second mortgage the beneficiaries of the television show took out less than 15 months ago.

Check out the story on the local news station.

Periodic Table of Elements Meets The Internet

July 31, 2008 – 5:55 am

Periodic Table of ElementsI usually do not write about Websites that are too far outside the areas of interest for the average cop or computer hobbyist. However, I had to make an exception for this Website about the Periodic Table of the Elements that is served up by deep thinkers at the University of Nottingham. If for no other reason, I had to mention it for its innovative educational methodology.

The home page is simply a graphic of the table of periodic elements but when you click on an element, a short video pops up. It is obvious that the scientists in the videos had a good time producing the educational flicks and they did a great job of making science understandable.

School will be starting shortly so let your friends with children know about this great resource. Better yet, shut off the television and spend some time relearning the elements for the fun of it.

Now You Can Junk Up Your Google Page

July 18, 2008 – 5:55 am

iGoogleIs there nothing that is sacred? I ran across a way for you to “personalize” your Google page – which is the politically correct way of saying you can junk it up. Personally I think it is heresy to change that nice, clean, white Google page but what do I know.

With iGoogle, you can start by adding a colorful theme to your page but you can do much more. There are numerous widgets that allow you to build a custom Google page including calendars, clocks, news headlines and videos. If you do not like the stock widgets, you can design your own.

So go ahead, junk up (I mean personalize) your Google page all you like. I am leaving mine in it’s pure white virgin state.

The Internet And Trivial Pursuits

July 17, 2008 – 5:55 am

Trivial InformationI do not know how I survived before the internet. Did you ever struggle to remember the name of an actor from an old movie or the name of a song? Before the internet, you had to call your friends or wait for your brain to suddenly recall the information. Now a quick trip to Google and you have your answer.

I no longer even bother trying to remember certain information. For instance, the other day I was mixing up some gasoline and oil for my weedeater. I knew that the mixture was 40:1 but I could not recall how much oil to add to a gallon of gasoline to get that ratio. A Google search phrase of “oil gas mixture for 40:1 ratio” turned up a site that in now in my bookmarks, the Gas Oil Mixture Ratio Calculator. It is this type of information that make the internet such a great resource.

Another useful site is the Acronym Finder. It will help you define acronyms and abbreviations, which is a must if you work for the government.

Finally, if you are out of your teens, particularly if you are a parent, let me give you a couple of websites that you should definitely bookmark. The first is the Urban Dictionary which defines virtually any slang term that the younger set might use. The second is Netlingo which has one of the most extensive lists of chat acronyms and text message shorthand on the internet. If your agency is considering adding the use of text messaging to your Crime Stopper program, you better visit this site to bone up on the lingo.

Google Shortens Your Walk

July 16, 2008 – 5:55 am

GoogleGoogle Maps is my first stop when I am going on a trip or trying to find my way to around town. Now, in some areas, they have made it even better by giving walkers and cyclists a hand. If you are fortunate enough be in one of the experimental areas, you can opt for walking direction when you search Google Maps. Unfortunately, I tried it in the Roanoke area but it doesn’t work here.

Its easy to determine if this new option is working in your area. Just click Get directions, enter your location and the location of your destination. After you have your directions, click Walk in the left corner of the screen. The new walker feature should shorten your walk by giving you the most direct route without regard for things like one way streets. Check it out!

Get Help With Vehicle Maintenance

July 15, 2008 – 5:55 am

RepairPalI am not a new car person! I have only bought one new vehicle in my life and I doubt that I will ever spend the money to buy another. Right now, I own a 1994 Toyota Camry and a 2005 Honda Pilot and I have no intention of getting rid of either. In my experience, the key to keeping an older vehicle running for many years is regular preventive maintenance. I have always tried to keep good maintenance records on my vehicles and this habit has proved to be useful in a couple of ways.

First, when I do eventually sell the vehicle, I get the best price possible because the buyer can see the maintenance history of the car. Second, a properly serviced vehicle lasts longer and saves you money at the gas pump.

If you have not been keeping good records on your vehicle repairs, let me suggest a great website that will make it easy for you. RepairPal will let you upload data to keep on top of your car’s maintenance but it will also help you save money in other ways. For example, f your vehicle needs servicing, it will help you find a garage and compare repair costs.

With the price of gasoline heading north of $4.00 per gallon, you need to save money on your transportation costs in any way possible. This is a great website and it is FREE (as in beer). Check it out.

Use Your Music Player As An Educational Tool

July 12, 2008 – 5:55 am

Project GutenbergI have always been interested in ideas that put popular tech gadgets to work for educational purposes. I think the iPod is highly underutilized as an educational tool. There are such great possibilities ranging from general audio and video training programs to foreign language practice.

The great thing about the internet is, if you know where to look, there are tons of free audio files all over the place. The tough part is making sure you do not violate someone’s copyright when you download a file.

However, there are places where you can get plenty of free (as in beer), legal audio files, including audiobooks that you can listen to on your MP3 player or computer.

Project Gutenberg has numerous free books that are read by both humans and computer-generated voices. The really great part, from an educational perspective, is the books are available in several languages. You can build your language skills by listening to books in the language of your choice.  Check them out for hours of great free entertainment or education.

Free Real Time Stock Quotes From Big G

July 8, 2008 – 5:55 am

GoogleToday’s stock market looks like a model of a sine wave with all of the ups and downs. If you trade stocks on-line it has been difficult to find a real time source for stock information. Most of the on-line services only offer stock tickers that are delayed 15 or 20 minutes which can be a lifetime on the stock market.

So what is a day trader to do? Well if you spend most of your time trading on NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange, Google has you covered. Beginning this past week they will be offering real-time stock quotes.

To access the real-time sale prices visit Google Finance or just enter the ticker symbol on Google’s search page. If you keep the page open your quotes will update automatically.

Mac Users Actually Do Get A Free Lunch

July 3, 2008 – 5:55 am

MacBookI love my MacBook. There, I said it. When was the last time that you heard a person profess their love for a Dell computer? OK, love may be a little strong but I sure do enjoy the things I can do on my Mac. What I really enjoy is the free software that is available for the Mac that makes my computing activities so much fun.

I run a training consulting company and an on-line training system so I have some pretty unique software needs. In the five years since I switched to a Mac, I have built quite a library of specialized Mac freeware. In my experience, if I discover some unique computing need, someone in the Mac community has already met the need by writing an inexpensive or free software program.  In fact, I recently discovered a fantastic repository of Mac open source freeware, FreeSmug.

FreeSmug is an online user group site that has a ton of tutorials, info, news and free Mac software. This is one site that every Mac user should have bookmarked. Check it out.

Take Your Firefox With You

June 28, 2008 – 5:56 am

FirefoxFor a long time, I have recommended making Firefox your browser of choice for a variety of reason, including security. Unfortunately, many business and agency IT departments prevent you from installing software on your work or public computer. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could have access to Firefox, along with your bookmarks, add-ons and passwords from any computer you use? Well now you can!

That’s right – now you can use the Mozilla Firefox – Portable Edition even when you are surfing the net on a borrowed or public computer, you don’t have to worry about leaving a trail behind. Just load Firefox Portable on a thumb drive that can plug into any computer. All you need is a thumb drive with at least 16.9 MB of space. I will let you use your imagination about why it might be a good idea to use this on your work computer.

There are versions of this great application available for both the Windows and Mac platforms.

Switching Docs In Word For Mac

June 27, 2008 – 5:55 am

Word MacGetting old sucks in a variety of ways but the one that really bothers me the most is the infamous “senior moment.” This is where you simply cannot recall something that you should obviously know like your neighbor’s last name or your work telephone number. I think I had my first confirmed senior moment the other day.

I like to use keyboard commands instead of using the mouse whenever possible. I think it is much faster to bang on a couple of keys than it is to click through the toolbar menus using a mouse. Unfortunately, some of the keyboard commands that work on a Windows box are different on a Mac. I hunted for days to find a keyboard shortcut to switch between open documents in Word for Mac. With Word for Windows, the keyboard command is “control-F6” or “shift-control-F6. Well I finally figured out that the key combination on a Mac is “command-`” (the ` is the key to the left of the number 1 key on the Mac keyboard). I was so happy to finally figure out this shortcut and I had occasion to use it several times after I found it. Life is good, right? Well not quite!

I was working on a few Word documents a couple of days ago and, when I went to use my newly discovered key command, I couldn’t remember it. So this article is for anyone who uses Word on a Mac – and for me. The next time I forget, I can just do a quick search on the blog for this article and I will be back on my way. One of the good thing about getting older is you develop the wisdom to know your limitations. Remembering keyboard commands must be one of mine.
